We’ll begin with a story about a challenging workplace dynamic at a Jewish non-profit organization. Two employees, Farah and Jonah are working together to plan an upcoming event for the young Jewish professionals that their organization serves.
Jonah, who is secular and Ashkenazi, suggests that the nametags at the event should include all attendees' pronouns, and the venue should add signs to change all bathrooms to be gender-neutral. “These are important steps toward creating an inclusive environment for attendees,” he explains.
Farah, who is traditional and Persian, disagrees with these suggestions. “Those changes would actually make me feel very uncomfortable,” she says. “I have no problem with how people identify, but I don't think it's right to require everyone to list their pronouns or use gender-neutral bathrooms. Why can't we let people choose?”
